13 Questions to Ask When Buying a Horse

Buying horse is a serious investment and there are so many factors to consider. Below is a list of questions we recommend asking any time you’re considering purchasing a new horse:

  1. Where is the horse located?

  2. How old is the horse (if it’s not registered)?

  3. How did you determine the age?

  4. How long has the seller had the horse?

  5. Where was the horse before? What history does the seller have?

  6. Any special diet/medications/lameness, etc?

  7. When was the last Veterinarian check?

  8. What records does the seller have?

  9. Is the horse currently shod? How are they with the Farrier? Does the seller have experience with this first hand?

  10. Has the horse been primarily ridden western, trails, etc?

  11. What bit does the horse currently use?

  12. How is the horse with other horses?

  13. Does the horse have any bad habits, cribbing, ever offered to buck, etc?
